THE NEWS IN BRIEF

Atlas Skill Building Workshops

Atlas is proud to add cupping, roasting and brewing education to it's already sizable list of services. Each of Atlas' workshops are designed to be fully interactive, and practically address those aspects of knowledge and skill essential to success in the specialty coffee market. If you're interested in learning more about Atlas' educational opportunities, take a look at our schedule to see when classes are available, and which class might best suit your needs.

Spring Cuppings at The Lab

'Tis the season for fresh, happy coffees, and we're opening up our lab for a whole slough of new crop cuppings. Check out the cupping calendar for a detailed list of upcoming cuppings, and please RSVP if you see one that you'd like to attend.

Congratulations (and Thanks!)

We are happy to announce that our own Al Liu has been elected to the SCAA Board of Directors for 2008-2010. Click here for the full election results. Thanks to all who lent their support.

Important information regarding freight claims

We have been experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of freight claims denied by our carriers recently, specifically, they will no longer pay out any claims that were not noted on the original delivery receipt. As such, Atlas can no longer accept any freight claims that are not accompanied by a copy of the delivery receipt noting loss or damage and signed off on by the driver. We understand that, particularly for the small business, it is not always possible to do a thorough inspection as freight is received so we offer these tips as a quick check list BEFORE the driver leaves.

  • Check the name on the delivery receipt and compare any tracking numbers on the receipt to bar codes on the shipment.
  • Count number of bags and compare it to the number on both your order the delivery receipt
  • Look at the underside of all the pallets to see if there are any broken boards or obvious spillage
  • Check that the stretch-wrap and banding is intact.

If any of these things look suspicious, a more thorough inspection is warranted. The driver is obliged to wait for this so do not feel rushed or pressured to sign off before you are completely ready to do so. Signing the delivery receipt legally releases the carrier from any further obligation, so be sure that you are signing for the coffee you wanted and that it is in the condition you expect.

Panama Esmeralda Special "Geisha": We purchased some of the non-auction lot of the now-famous Best of Panama winner (a bargain really, at least compared to the $130/lb. auction price) . This coffee is one of those rare birds that lives up to the hype and the price. Jasmine, lemon, bergamot, and other mind-blowingly distinct flavors make this coffee a one-of-a-kind experience. Available in full 132 lb. bags or in 10 lb. increments.
