Breaking News

5, Mar '10 - The Spring weather keeps on keepin' on here in Seattle. It's 60ºF here today, and the fruit trees are exploding in buds and blossoms everywhere. In coffee news, Rwanda Abakundakawa and Brazil Micro-lots are keeping all of our spirits high, and our first arrivals from Central America are right around the corner. Suzy and Chris are heading out soon for the 3rd Annual Las Capucas micro-lot competition in Copan, Honduras, Craig's jetting to London next week for a Q Grader training, and Al's off to Indonesia for the second half of March. Twitterpated!

23, Feb '10 - After a week of amazingly sunny, Spring-like weather, we're back to the drizzly chill of temperate winter here in Seattle. Craig and Chris just got back from the East African Fine Coffee Association conference in Mombasa, Kenya, and Al is down in Chiapas, Mexico spending a few days with our friends at Unión Majomut. We're starting to see some pretty fantastic coffees coming in, most notably our Brazil micro-lots from Santo Antonio Estates, and the coffee that wins awards both for Freshest East African Offering, and Funnest Name To Say: Abakundakawa! Our first offering from Rwanda in several years, this Fair Trade certified (non-organic) gem is bursting with ripe red currant fruit, and refreshing hibiscus and sweet grapefruit acidity. Fresh coffee rules!

¡Lo Mejor de Monserrate!

Check out photos and videos from Atlas' recent visit to Monserrate, Huila, Colombia, and read about the amazing Colombia micro-lots that were the focus of the trip!

Important information regarding freight claims

We have been experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of freight claims denied by our carriers recently, specifically, they will no longer pay out any claims that were not noted on the original delivery receipt. As such, Atlas can no longer accept any freight claims that are not accompanied by a copy of the delivery receipt noting loss or damage and signed off on by the driver. We understand that, particularly for the small business, it is not always possible to do a thorough inspection as freight is received so we offer these tips as a quick check list BEFORE the driver leaves.

  • Check the name on the delivery receipt and compare any tracking numbers on the receipt to bar codes on the shipment.
  • Count number of bags and compare it to the number on both your order the delivery receipt
  • Look at the underside of all the pallets to see if there are any broken boards or obvious spillage
  • Check that the stretch-wrap and banding is intact.

If any of these things look suspicious, a more thorough inspection is warranted. The driver is obliged to wait for this so do not feel rushed or pressured to sign off before you are completely ready to do so. Signing the delivery receipt legally releases the carrier from any further obligation, so be sure that you are signing for the coffee you wanted and that it is in the condition you expect.
