Breaking News

24, June, '09 - Caloo Calay! More fresh crop arrivals! We're especially excited about our first delivery of 2009 from Las Capucas, Copan, Honduras. This Fair Trade, Organic AND Rainforest Alliance certified coffee features aromas of toffee and caramel, a sparkling green apple acidity and an effervescent mouthfeel. Another wonderful recent arrival is from the Majomut Cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico. Laden with black cherry and milk chocoloate flavors, this Fair Trade and Organic certified strictly high grown coffee is available in both a Gourmet and European Preparation. Those of you looking for a slightly larger bean may like to try the Gourmet, and if bean size isn't much of an issue and you'd like to save a few pennies, the EP's an excellent option.

On a more somber note, it pains us to bid a fond adieu to Nicolas Rodriguez, our lab intern from Colombia who has been working with us for the past several months. Many of you have had the opportunity to meet Nicolas while he's been here, either at a trade show, or while cupping at Atlas' lab, and you know what a joy he is to be around. He'll continue to work with Atlas as our quality control agent in Colombia, so you can be sure that you'll be seeing more of him again in the future. ¡Adios, Nicolas!

Out with the Old...

As our new spring arrivals are beginning to trickle in, it's time to move along some of our more "vintage" offerings. In particular, if you like the funky Indos, give us a call for great deals on Java Estate (New Jersey), India Parchment Pb Robusta (New Jersey), Aged Sumatra (Seattle), and Indian Monsooned Malabar (Seattle). For you bargain hunters on the East Coast in search of affordable natural process decaf coffees, we have a few straggling bags of Swiss Water Process™ Decaf Java, Sumatra and FTO Mexico available, as well as a couple of bags of Mountain Water Process Organic Sumatra, at blowout prices. Give us a call for more info!

Cup of Excellence Season has Returned!

That's right, folks! Cup of Excellence cuppings have returned to the Atlas Lab, and we're excited to be expanding this season's cuppings to all interested participants. Baristas, roasters and green buyers are all encouraged to attend, beginning with the first CoE Cupping of Spring 2009, CoE Colombia, on Wednesday the 22nd of April. Check out the Cupping Calendar for more info.

Important information regarding freight claims

We have been experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of freight claims denied by our carriers recently, specifically, they will no longer pay out any claims that were not noted on the original delivery receipt. As such, Atlas can no longer accept any freight claims that are not accompanied by a copy of the delivery receipt noting loss or damage and signed off on by the driver. We understand that, particularly for the small business, it is not always possible to do a thorough inspection as freight is received so we offer these tips as a quick check list BEFORE the driver leaves.

  • Check the name on the delivery receipt and compare any tracking numbers on the receipt to bar codes on the shipment.
  • Count number of bags and compare it to the number on both your order the delivery receipt
  • Look at the underside of all the pallets to see if there are any broken boards or obvious spillage
  • Check that the stretch-wrap and banding is intact.

If any of these things look suspicious, a more thorough inspection is warranted. The driver is obliged to wait for this so do not feel rushed or pressured to sign off before you are completely ready to do so. Signing the delivery receipt legally releases the carrier from any further obligation, so be sure that you are signing for the coffee you wanted and that it is in the condition you expect.
