Following the liquidation of the former Ngiriama Cooperative Society, its Kii, Karimikui, and Kiangoi factories came together to form Rung’eto Farmers’ Cooperative Society. The successor cooperative began processing coffee in 1997, continuing a history of coffee production in the region. Today, Rungeto’s three factories serve smallholder farmers in Kirinyaga, processing and preparing their coffee for export.
At Kiangoi Factory, ripe cherry is handpicked and sorted before being pulped and fermented overnight. The coffee is then washed, sorted, and dried on raised tables for 8–14 days.
Rung’eto’s management has introduced a number of improvements across its factories to support coffee quality and more efficient processing. Washing channels and fermentation tanks have been tiled for easier cleaning, while water used during processing is reused. The cooperative has also installed longer-lasting metal drying tables, helping reduce maintenance and repair costs.
This coffee was sourced through our sister company, NKG East Africa, a green coffee exporter operating across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. With an established presence at origin, NKG East Africa works directly with smallholder farmers and cooperatives to source quality coffee and support resilient, sustainable supply chains. As part of Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, the company combines local relationships and expertise with a global network.
