Located in Nyeri, just outside the town of Karatina, Rutuma Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS) brings together smallholder farmers through five factories. Established in 2005 through the consolidation of three cooperatives, Rutuma has a long history of coffee production in the region. Ngandu Factory, one of its five facilities, was established in 1964.
At Ngandu, farmers sort their cherry before delivery, and only ripe cherry is accepted for processing. After pulping, the parchment is fermented overnight, then graded and dried on raised beds for 10–16 days. Processing water is sourced from the Ruthagati Dam. The factory also puts pulp waste to use as fertilizer for coffee trees, returning organic material to the farm and supporting soil health.
This coffee was sourced through our sister company, NKG East Africa, a green coffee exporter operating across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. With an established presence at origin, NKG East Africa works directly with smallholder farmers and cooperatives to source quality coffee and support resilient, sustainable supply chains. As part of Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, the company combines local relationships and expertise with a global network.
