Three Clouds

By: Dana Foster

Where the Pacific winds push clouds against the volcanic peaks of Costa Rica’s Central Valley, there is a place where the sky and the farmland meet. Tres Nubes — Three Clouds — takes its name from this landscape: the high-altitude farms where this coffee is grown sit at precisely the elevation where the mist rolls in, cooling the air, softening the light, and creating the ideal conditions for exceptional coffee.

“At the heights of the mountains where our Tres Nubes coffee is grown, a beautiful landscape and serene atmosphere is created for coffee cultivation.”

The lush volcanic soils of this valley, enriched by centuries of geological activity and kept fertile by the region’s reliable rainfall, are among the most prized growing environments in all of Central America. Stable temperatures and abundant year-round sunlight complete the picture — a terroir that needs little intervention to produce coffee of outstanding character.

Tres Nubes is not the product of a single estate. It is the work of a carefully selected group of independent smallholder farmers across some of Costa Rica’s most storied coffee-growing communities — Naranjo, Grecia, Poás, San Ramón, Heredia, Palmichal, Acosta, San Gabriel, and Santa Ana — families who tend their plantations with methods passed down through generations. Their old-fashioned approach is no limitation; it is the reason the coffee tastes the way it does.

Together, these farms celebrate the natural beauty of their region — and the people who have chosen to protect it through thoughtful, quality-first cultivation.

After harvest, the coffee is brought to Beneficio Palmichal, where it is washed and mechanically dried before being handed to our NKG sister company, Ceca S.A., for sorting and quality control. Every step is designed to preserve the clarity and consistency that define Tres Nubes in the cup.

Tres Nubes comes to us through Ceca, a Costa Rican institution that has served national and international coffee buyers since 1950. Over more than seven decades, Ceca has grown into one of the country’s most trusted exporters, offering the full spectrum of Costa Rican coffees — from large-scale export lots to single-origin micro-mill selections, including their own wet mill operation in the Tarrazú region. We have worked with Ceca for many years, and since 2020 our relationship has deepened into a formal partnership as sister companies within the NKG family.
