$Our 7th annual Bukonzo Joint Cooperative Union (BJCU) micro-lot competition took place virtually this week! Through this competition, we celebrate the micro-washing stations\' work and create our bulk community lot, Owemba. This blended lot is comprised of high-scoring micro-lots and provides an economical price point for roasters. ⁠ ⁠ BJCU has been a pioneer in quality washed specialty Arabica coffee and gender equity at the family, cooperative, and community level.⁠ ⁠ These coffees will begin landing in May 2021. Interested in supporting and sourcing from BJCU? Let us know what you need for this next season, as we are finalizing our purchases from BJCU by the end of January!⁠ ⁠ In the meantime, current crop Owemba is available at TGR, and is a go-to suggestion for several applications-- single-origin espresso, blend component, or batch brew. $Situated in the San Ignacio Province at 1800 meters, La Prosperidad de Chirinos, also known as “Chirinos,\" shares its name with the community it inhabits. Our relationship officially began in 2015 with the purchase of a container and several single producer micro-lots. Although Chirinos is larger than many of the cooperatives we work with in Peru, they are certainly the most quality-focused. They have made tremendous investments in their lab and quality control training program, both for employees and producer members.⁠ ⁠ Founded in 1968, Chirinos is currently comprised of over 700 producer members, and some pioneer members can still be seen helping out around the cooperative. For the past several years, Chirinos has been working hard to highlight exemplary micro-lots from dedicated members. Located anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours away from the community, most producers have around four to five hectares. The vast majority of this coffee comes from high altitudes, giving it great complexity and sought after acidity. One of the fascinating features of this cooperative is its dedication to its members’ well-being by diversifying their lands. ⁠ ⁠ This year, we purchased a blended bulk lot from Chirinos and single-producer micro-lots, but only the community lot remains. With a nice depth and sweetness and flavors of plum, raisin, brown sugar, lemon, and salt, this juicy coffee is perfect as either a Single Origin or a blend component. $The Kahawa Link Company (Kalico, for short) has washing stations located in the Kirundo and Muyinga Provinces in North-Eastern Burundi, each serving 1,000 to 3,000 small-scale farmers who primarily grow Bourbon. This is one of our longest relationships in Burundi and we are so excited to have the opportunity to share these coffees with you again in 2021!⁠ ⁠ At Kalico, they wet ferment the coffee for 12 to 18 hours, followed by a one-hour soak, wash, pre-dry, and sort before drying the coffee on raised beds. To improve coffee quality, owner Angele knew she needed to start with the producers\' education, so Kalico began with outreach to ensure best practices from nurseries to picking. ⁠ ⁠ This year two lots, one women\'s lot and one family-coffee lot, will land on the West Coast in March. The preship samples on these scored 87.75-88.5 and were densely sweet and juicy, with dark fruit notes of raisin, plum, prune, cranberry, toffee, and brown sugar.
