$The Kahawa Link Company (Kalico, for short) has washing stations located in the Kirundo and Muyinga Provinces in North-Eastern Burundi, each serving 1,000 to 3,000 small-scale farmers who primarily grow Bourbon. This is one of our longest relationships in Burundi and we are so excited to have the opportunity to share these coffees with you again in 2021!⁠ ⁠ At Kalico, they wet ferment the coffee for 12 to 18 hours, followed by a one-hour soak, wash, pre-dry, and sort before drying the coffee on raised beds. To improve coffee quality, owner Angele knew she needed to start with the producers\' education, so Kalico began with outreach to ensure best practices from nurseries to picking. ⁠ ⁠ This year two lots, one women\'s lot and one family-coffee lot, will land on the West Coast in March. The preship samples on these scored 87.75-88.5 and were densely sweet and juicy, with dark fruit notes of raisin, plum, prune, cranberry, toffee, and brown sugar. $In 2008, Atlas facilitated the first “Lo Mejor de Monserrate” microlot competition in order to give farmers the opportunity to have their lots cupped and scored independent of the rest of the group. Those first farmers that built relationships with roasters served as models of success for the rest of the community, and each year brings higher quality coffees, freshly motivated farmers, and an opportunity for roasters and producers to connect in a uniquely personal way. ⁠ ⁠ In 2020, COVID-19 shut down our ability to travel, so we conducted our cupping competition remotely last fall. Although most microlots were pre-sold to historic buyers, we have a couple of bags landing in February for those seeking something rare. $The community of Monserrate straddles a ridge in the beautiful Cordillera Central mountain range in the southwestern state (department) of Huila. Most residents of Monserrate and surrounding communities are small-scale farmers. $In 2008, thirty women in the Muhanga district, Southern Province, in the center of Rwanda, were tired of traveling up to 18 km/11 miles away to sell their coffee cherry and decided to pool resources and form a women’s association named “Kundwa”, meaning “love” in Kinyarwanda. In 2014, the Sholi Cooperative was borne out of this association, and of the 157 women who belong to Sholi, 70 are also members of Kundwa. ⁠ Jeanne D’arc Mugorewishyaka is the President of Sholi, and two of Sholi’s five board members are women. ⁠ ⁠ To date, Kundwa has used their Fair Trade and quality-premium funds to start a micro-finance program, buy health insurance for its members, and pay for school fees for their children. They have their own coffee plot and collectively own two cows. They sell baby calves for money and sell milk at the local market, and are trying to give each new member a goat (and once the goat has a kid, the first goat kid is given back to the cooperative). ⁠ ⁠ Along with an FTO-certified washed community/family lot and a natural, we just received Sholi\'s Women-Produced coffee. Complex and juicy with a fruity profile of apricot, peach, cranberry, lemon, and toffee, the women\'s lot shines.
